I get asked all the time what type of .22 parents should get their kids, so I did a little research and here you go. For my kids’ first gun, we went with a cheap bb gun. Nothing fancy, just something so they could learn the mechanics of loading, cocking, aiming and firing. It didn’t take my son long and he wanted to “graduate”, so we looked at air rifles first, but then decided on a .22 rifle (I almost went with a .17, but that was more for me, so I restrained myself). I already have 3 or 4 .22’s around the house, but they were all too long for my son and not the right gun for him. So here are some good choices for your kids. Basically, there are a few different kinds of rifle available for the new shooter: the... [SEE MORE]

A friend of mine, best selling author and fellow hunter Marc Warnkerecently got into an online tussle with an anti-hunter about wolves. They sent him an article from a blog which included all of the “facts” on wolves and how they keep forests nutrient-rich. Neither Marc nor I are wolf haters, but we are realists. Here is Marc’s well thought out reply: Thanks for the thought and I know your intent was to educate me and I appreciate that. I found this [article] interesting, yet not without obvious bias. I’ve personally witnessed different results, multiple times. But it’s all good. My main concern would be that we participate intelligently in the “predatory” cycle along with the wolves. People, hunters,... [SEE MORE]

Every once in a while I get to thinking! Usually when this happens there is a flash of conscious thought accompanied by a blank stare then it is over, and I resume my normal activities. This time however, I had a real brainstorm.. Bob Red Hawk has been helping to put bows in the hands of youth for years. I feel it is my turn to try and do my part for those who might never get the opportunity otherwise… What if every archer in the U.S.A. heard my idea and joined in? What if every kid, grandma, daughter, son, uncle, brother, aunt or sister had the opportunity to learn archery from someone who already lives for the sport? So hear goes, if you have a bow you aren’t using.. Or if you have the means to get a bow for someone else and... [SEE MORE]

Hello hunting friends…I’ve been out harassing a few of God’s tasty animals…well, one semi-tasty one and one that I don’t like to eat at all, so I had to call one of my many bear consumption sources who does think that bears are tasty too. The bear is my best spot and stalk bow bear yet. Hope you guys are doing well! I think the turkey was blind, deaf and dumb to come into range of the blind with my two boys wiggling and giggling around in there but we managed to pull it off. It was a blast! #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1... Seriously, kids are fishy. Photo: Mike Duffy One of the best parts about being in the outdoor industry is having the opportunity to host family groups at awesome locations. We absolutely love having kids around, and watching the experiences that family groups have together couldn’t be more gratifying. Fathers, daughters, sons, mothers, uncles, grandparents and more – we’ve seen it all and we love it. We get a lot of questions from people looking to take their kids fishing, so here’s a little primer. Where Should We Go? As far as our lodges are concerned, unless your child is a passionate steelheader or bonefish angler, you should probably go to Alaska. Here’s why: The fishery on the Kanektok is extremely productive.... [SEE MORE]

Hog hunting in Utah you ask? Well, kind of… For the past few years we have gone camping with my wife’s family in Utah during Easter weekend. Our traditional Easter camping spot is about a mile or so away from a big ranch loaded with exotic game including Russian Boar and I’m intrigued every time we drive down to camp. Our itinerary usually includes paint-ball wars, Easter egg hunts for the kids, hiking, riding four-wheelers, fishing and shooting clay pigeons. Just your average good ‘ole redneck-type fun. As you know, the weather this time of year can be marginal at best and this year was no exception. While we were staring at each other over the fire in the rain we naturally started talking about hunting, and that led... [SEE MORE]

A good friend of mine, Cary Craner sent me this story of their elk hunts this year. He hunts the same areas I do so the exact whereabouts are off limits. Congratulations Cary and good job getting those kids out there. Logan, my son drew a cow elk tag in one of Idaho’s premier elk hunting units. Opening day we went up with Grandpa Craner and hunted 1/2 day to see what was around we saw a huge herd Bull and about 20 cows. Logan got a couple of broadside shots at a cow about 250 yards away and we thought he had hit it but no luck. I had to go to Salt Lake City for the weekend for a scouting meeting so that is why we could only hunt 1/2 day. The next weekend Logan and I hauled the trailer up Thursday night to the campground. Kaden had... [SEE MORE]

Jim Mortensen sent us this story about his 12 year old niece Christina’s first deer. We’re big here on getting kids out to experience the outdoors. It takes a lot of dedication to sacrifice precious time during your hunting season, but it’s worth it. Great job Jim, and thanks for the story. Our hunt started a little late as we encountered problems getting through the gate due to uncooperative cattle. We eventually made it through and arrived at our hunting area around 3:00 p.m. Finally, let’s hunt! We drove around to the top and saw quite a few does but no bucks. We were hopeful a fork horn would give Christina a nice 100 yard shot but no luck. We continued to scout the north side and then made our way around to the south.... [SEE MORE]
