Learn the Basics of Turkey Calling It’s just about that time of year. I dusted off the turkey calls last night and thought a post on turkey calling may be in order. Wild turkey calling takes time and effort to learn, and knowing the basics of wild turkey vocalizations is crucial to being able to use different calls successfully. Wild turkeys make at least eight different calls, as well as several subtypes of calls that are season specific. You don’t need to know them all, just the major ones which are: Cluck: The cluck consists of one or more short, staccato notes. The plain cluck, many times, includes two or three single note clucks. It’s generally used by one bird to get the attention of another. It’s a good call to... [SEE MORE]

I get asked all the time what type of .22 parents should get their kids, so I did a little research and here you go. For my kids’ first gun, we went with a cheap bb gun. Nothing fancy, just something so they could learn the mechanics of loading, cocking, aiming and firing. It didn’t take my son long and he wanted to “graduate”, so we looked at air rifles first, but then decided on a .22 rifle (I almost went with a .17, but that was more for me, so I restrained myself). I already have 3 or 4 .22’s around the house, but they were all too long for my son and not the right gun for him. So here are some good choices for your kids. Basically, there are a few different kinds of rifle available for the new shooter: the... [SEE MORE]

One of my Coues deer from a more successful hunt I had hoped to have good news this week about my recent coues deer hunt in Southern Arizona. No deer but I did have a great time. The Winchester Mountain Range is a very big and rugged environment which makes bowhunting quite a challenge. Those coues deer are “wrascully wittle wabbits”. I saw lots of critters but no bucks closer than 250 yards. My archery skills only go out to about 160 yards (ha). So I have decided not to linger on that subject for long and just post a picture of my success in the past and move on to the spring fishing season. I love fishing for Stripers at Lake Powell WE ARE HAVING A CONTEST! Cory and I are so blessed by being able to live out our passion for... [SEE MORE]

Two of the dead animals were trophy rams. A Montana motorist drove his pickup truck through a herd of bighorn sheep near Anaconda, MT, on monday, killing at least eight animals. A tragedy to say the least. The driver, an unnamed adult male of Anaconda, MT, was cited with failure to obey a traffic signal. Two, large electronic signs on both sides of the highway warn motorists to be aware of bighorn sheep on the road. Montana wildlife personnel were looking for other sheep Monday afternoon that left the crash scene after being injured. More sheep deaths are expected. The sheep were on the road because they gather there to lick salt, put there by road crews to melt ice. Read More →

Stacey Huston says ‘look out your window’ We all enjoy venturing out into nature, if for nothing more than to recharge our souls. Nature has a way, if you are willing to put aside the pettiness of life, of putting life into perspective. She shows us the simple little things in life and lays them all out for each to discover. If you are willing to look and listen, nature has the answer to most any problem. I hear people tell me all the time that if they had my camera, or my lens, or if they lived where I do, then they would be able to take good photos too. However, it honestly isn’t the equipment you use; cameras and lenses are only tools, even though I am pretty proud and protective of my camera. It is all in how you choose to look at... [SEE MORE]

By the Boone and Crockett Club .300 Magnums take more North American trophies than any other caliber. Although the venerable .30-06 and .270 remain among the favorites, Boone and Crockett Club big-game records show that hunters with one of the various .300 Magnums are taking decidedly more North American trophies than any other caliber. Surprisingly, the second-most-popular trophy-taker isn’t a firearm — it’s a bow. Boone and Crockett compiled the data from its records book entries from 2007 through 2009. This three-year period of big-game trophies, fair-chase hunting and success in conservation and game management will be celebrated at the Club’s 27th triennial Big Game Awards, June 24-26, 2010, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. by Deneki Outdoors Pretty cool, actually. Photo: Cameron Miller True, not many anglers head to Alaska specifically to target pink salmon. That’s OK though – we still think they’re pretty awesome fish. Here’s why. Every other year there are billions of them. OK, not billions, but on even-numbered years on the Kanektok, our pink numbers are very, very large. They eat poppers. Find ‘em where they’re fresh, and they’re more than happy to eat surface flies, and surface flies for salmon are cool. They’re a ton of fun on a 6 weight. It may not be a big-game experience, but fishing a lighter-weight rod can be a nice break when you’ve spent most of your week pulling on the big boys. They make a great shore lunch. Pinks don’t keep... [SEE MORE]
