From SD Game Fish and Parks PIERRE, S.D. – According to a survey done by the Game Fish and Parks Department, more than 176,000 resident and non-resident hunters pursued ring-necked pheasants in South Dakota during the 2008 season. Hunters harvested approximately 1.9 million birds. Resident hunters averaged 7.3 days in the field and harvested 11.5 birds each. Nonresident hunters averaged 4.5 days and 10.5 birds. Approximately 18,800 residents participated in the early, resident-only pheasant season, with an estimated harvest of 40,632 birds. South Dakota’s inaugural mentored pheasant season saw participation of 2,566 youth hunters. I’m hoping to hunt whitetails in Kansas this fall in order to check out a new outfitter. I know, my job sucks, but I do my best to keep my head up. I figured I would post the application process as a resource to our clients, so here ya go: From Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park Applications must be made online through the KDWP website and the application deadline is midnight on June 1. Downloadable mail-in applications are not available, and none will be accepted. This application applies to Nonresident White-tailed Deer permits only. Nonresident Hunt-Own-Land and Antlerless White-tailed Deer permits will be available over the counter. From Idaho Fish and Game The federal rule that removes gray wolves in Idaho from the endangered species list became final today, Monday, May 4. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s delisting rule affects wolves in Idaho, Montana, parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Wolves in Wyoming will remain on the endangered species list. Idaho has again taken over managing wolves under state law adopted in 2008 and under a wolf population management plan also adopted last year. “We have to move on and manage them similar to other big game animals,” Fish and Game Director Cal Groen said. “This is good news for wolves, elk, rural communities and hunters. Recap of the Hailey Wolf Rally 4/4/09 “I would estimate 300-350 in attendance and the parking lot was full of cars. The meeting started at 6:00 pm and the caretakers had to turn out the lights at 11:00 pm – there simply was enough time for everyone who filled out a comment card to be heard. A lot of passion about this subject with 99.9% of the residents saying something must be done right away to control and remove the wolves. Cal Groen indicated that the IDF&G is keenly aware of the urgency of this wolf issue. He said his department is capable of managing wolves just as they do all other game species.
