Myth No. 1: Most of the birds are shot when the season opens. It’s a tradition like no other.. an opening weekend pheasant hunt in South Dakota. Each year, outdoor enthusiasts from around the world re-visit the state where they have been developing traditions, friendship and memories for generations. In addition to great friends, family and hospitable South Dakota residents, hunters, will often experience a bit of success on an opening season hunt. Many think the success of early season hunters is enough to deplete one of the highest pheasant populations in recent history. Fortunately for us, and our pheasants, this is not the case. Bag limits will depend on a variety of factors that may sometimes limit the number of birds taken early... [SEE MORE]

North Dakota If you live in or near North Dakota, several national wildlife refuges and a state wildlife management area will offer sharp-tailed grouse observation blinds for public use this spring. The blinds are popular with wildlife photographers and others interested in watching the spring courtship rituals of sharp-tailed grouse. Grouse blinds typically receive widespread interest and are available by reservation only. Those locations offering blinds usually start taking reservations for late March or early April, weather permitting. Peak grouse dancing activity usually occurs from mid-April into early May. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has an observation blind at Lonetree Wildlife Management Area southwest of Harvey. Call (701)... [SEE MORE]

We’re excited to introduce a new Outdoors International contributor, Howard Brown and are looking forward to his upcoming retriever training series. My name is Howard and I am an avid outdoorsman. Growing up in Missouri, I started hunting very early in life. It all started out with squirrels and rabbits, and then moved on to turkeys and deer. From about the age of 8, I found it very satisfying to be able to be able to put food on my families table. My brother in law was my hunting mentor and it was he that started me out on the right track. We harvested animals in order to feed our family. As much as I enjoyed hunting, it was never a sport to me. I played baseball and football, ran track and wrestled; those were sports, hunting... [SEE MORE]

PIERRE, S.D. – A proposal to lengthen the South Dakota pheasant season one week will be considered at the April Game, Fish and Parks Commission meeting in Sioux Falls. The recommendation brought forward by the GFP Division of Wildlife would extend the season from the first Sunday in January to the second Sunday of the month. “We heard from several hunters that they wished the season would have lasted a little longer this year,” said Division Director Tony Leif. “By extending the season a week, we are hoping to provide hunters a little more opportunity during a time when opportunities are abundant.” Proposals to extend the grouse and quail seasons to the second Sunday in January will be taken under consideration as well. Hello All – My youngest daughter Ashlyn got another javelina this past weekend. Made a nice 100 yard shot on a 7-8 year old Arizona javelina. Most of these don’t seem to get past 3-4 years old. This one had very few teeth left. She is getting to be quite the huntress even though she still has me pack them out. She bought me a new pack for Christmas and let me use it all the way out! We were joined by my good friend Tim Maddock and his 6 year old boy Connor “bulldog” Maddock. We went for the weekend but were back home in time for dinner opening day. Ashlyn got this Arizona javelina on Feb. 20, 2009 Both of my daughters had a great year this year. My oldest daughter, Bethany shot a muzzleloader cow in Decemeber and... [SEE MORE]

We caught this cat 1/27/09. He is a beautiful cat with even a more beautiful girl taking him, Clancy Sayer took this cat with a 22-250 after a hard days work. The tom was trailing a female that was a couple days old and made some serious tracks the night before. After a long race and him jumping 6 times in front of us because of the low cedars we finally kept him up where she put a very nice shot on him. This girl is going to be way deadly, she loves it. Congrats Clancy! Mike Pimentel Read More →

Conclusion of: The Heartbreak Bull – Part I | Part II …I sat there in my blind for about an hour. Dejected. Depressed. Beaten. I could hear the two bulls above me. Taunting me. I decided I was going after them. I had nothing to lose, it was my last chance. I can’t remember how, but Cary ended up with me again later that day. We ate lunch and made our last march up to the bedding area. It was late afternoon and the wind was actually blowing down towards us while we slowly picked our way through the timber and we could hear the big bull bugling up above us. The herd was slowly work up and over the ridge. We had to hurry! We pushed hard to within 100 yards of the bull and we could see him and a few cows milling around up ahead... [SEE MORE]
