Salmon Shark-/ Lamna Ditropis - This outfitter targets Alaska’s most powerful & unique gamefish in many of the remote protected bays that Prince William Sound has to offer. Salmon Sharks are cousins of Great White & Mako Sharks & they follow the millions of wild salmon that return to the Sound each year to spawn. Some of your fishing locations literally have hundreds of Sharks gorging on salmon near the surface; an incredible spectacle as these apex predators can launch themselves out of water while chasing salmon. Sharks typically range between 250-500 lbs. but can get nearly twice as big in size! Long grueling battles are the norm on these Sharks as they have been compared to the fight of giant Marlin. This sportfishery... [SEE MORE]

UNION GROVE, Wis. — Gary Martin finally completed the archery goal he started more than 20 years ago. Only sixteen people in the world have completed the Super Slam animals with a bow and arrow. “It’s a journey,” said 54-year-old Martin, an SC Johnson technologist and taxidermist. Gary Martin completed his Super Slam and his Grand Slam of North American wild sheep with this Rocky Mountain bighorn, taken on a hunt in Alberta in November, 2008. So what is the Super Slam? The North American archery “Super Slam” involves taking the 28 North American big game animals as recognized by the Pope & Young Club by bow and arrow. The animals in the North American archery “Super Slam” are: Grizzly bear Alaska brown bear black... [SEE MORE]

I came accross this story recently while browsing HuntersNetworks.com. It is about a man who found a poached rhino in Africa and while looking for evidence, found a baby rhino. He took it home and is raising it. Pretty cool story. The news came in from a gamescout patrol via hand-held radio. A rhino had been poached not far from Elephant water-point in the Jurus area, and they had discovered the carcass. Always quick to react to any crisis situation on Humani, manager Charlie Pienaar and a handful of gamescouts were at the scene in double quick time. The kill zone was actually a few kilometers into a vast mopani forest that offsets the acacia-sprinkled, open plains of Jurus. After scouting about the immediate vicinity for clues and coming... A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt. The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country’s government and install a new communist government. In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, ‘Do you know how to catch wild pigs?’ The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was... [SEE MORE]

North Dakota Game and Fish Department biologists indicate the final 4-6 weeks of winter will be critical to the health of the state’s wildlife. “Depending on how the rest of the winter plays out, the cumulative impact could be significant,” said Randy Kreil, wildlife chief. Reports of pheasant losses continue, especially after the statewide rain experienced in early February. “Reports across the state vary from birds doing okay to areas with considerable losses,” said Stan Kohn, upland game bird supervisor. “In some instances, landowners are reporting 75 percent fewer birds than they did in the beginning of winter.” The Game and Fish Department receives phone calls on a regular basis from hunters inquiring about what this winter... Marc Warnke and I went up to Orofino to turkey hunt for the last week of the season. He had a spot that he had been hunting for years and knew it well. I was excited to turkey hunt with somebody who knew what they were doing, all of my friends and I just sort of winged it every year, learning as we went. We were always successful, but I felt like we got lucky most of the time. Marc has turkey hunted in a lot of different states with some experienced people, so I was looking forward to learning something. Marc hunted with his wife Sue and his mom for a few days before I showed up. They worked some birds, but didn’t get anything put together. I drove up to meet him on the day that Sue and his mom went home. It was pretty nice because we camped... [SEE MORE]

I was thinking about my 2008 season and the adventures I had taken and the people I had met. I must tell you that if it were not for the outdoor experiences I would not have met these people. Living in Nevada everything involving Big Game requires a draw and I was lucky enough to draw a muzzleloader tag in an area I know well. Well on this adventure I met two groups of people. One of these groups was an experienced but older set of men. After talking to them and hearing how they had not seen anything, my daughter and I chose to help them on their quest to fill their tag. The next morning we arrived on a long mountain rage with many fingers and patches of trees. Not long after I spotted some deer and in the group were three smaller bucks. I showed... [SEE MORE]

About a month ago, The Defenders of Wildlife ran a campaign with an Internet-based video by actress Ashley Judd criticizing Alaska’s predator control program and Sarah Palin in particular. The video is as the first step of a larger campaign aimed at Palin’s conservation policies, and promises future critiques of polar bear and endangered-species policies. Recently the US Sportsman’s Alliance has rallied in defense of Palin. In a letter to Palin, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance defends the state program as rigorously regulated and scientifically based. The group attacks a recent “public relations blitz” by Defenders of Wildlife as a publicity stunt, saying effective wildlife management requires that “emotional pleas not... [SEE MORE]
