From the Idaho Department of Fish and Game The Idaho Department of Fish and Game wants to hear from hunters about proposed changes to the 2009-2010 moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat seasons. The public will have opportunities to meet with biologists to review data and make recommendations at regional meetings. Proposed changes for the Clearwater Region include: Decrease the number of moose permits in most game management units and reconfigure the current “partial” unit area boundaries in Units 16A, 17, 19 and 20 and make them each unit-wide hunts. Decrease the number of sheep permits in most units, and combine the two hunt areas in Unit 20 into one single hunt area. No proposed season changes for Mountain Goat. Upper Snake Region... [SEE MORE]

If we want anything to get done concerning the management of wolves, we have to voice our opinion. The link below will send your opinion directly to the federal agency that now has controll. They will only accept comments until Nov. 28th…. I wish I would have found this sooner. Please forward this to everyone you can and please leave a comment. http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=SubmitComment&o=090000648078074f Here is a good example comment: I think it is O.K. to have wolves in the state of Idaho, but I also believe it is illogical and irresponsible to not manage their population. I feel that the Idaho Fish & Game was on the right track with their proposed management plan for the species. It is a... [SEE MORE]

Check out this fish, sent to me via an email friend who’s buddy shocked it up on the South Fork of the Snake River for Idaho Department of Fish and Game recently. Looks to me like the lower canyon stretch, above Byington… what do you think? 31″ and girth measurements ~12 lbs. Dreams are made of fish like this one. And the best part? He’s still out there. A pretty cool picture of some wolves seen just outside the town of Ketchum, Idaho. No matter your opinion of wolves (I’m not really a fan myself), you’ve got to admit that they’re great looking animals. It’s not their fault that people are stupid. Read More →

My good friend Marc Warnke and I each have kids of similar ages. He has two sons (4 and 1) and I have two sons (7 and 4) and a little girl (2). We are both pretty committed dads, but there is always room for improvement, so we decided to make an obligation to get our kids outside on some sort of adventure at least once a month. It doesn’t matter if we go hunting, fishing, hiking, rafting, rock climbing… whatever. As long as we get them out. We started our project last weekend with a little quail hunt. I have an “old reliable” spot that is fairly close for both of us and an easy hike for the boys. The last few years there have been TONS of California Quail there. It wasn’t uncommon to see 10 coveys with 10 to 50... [SEE MORE]

One of our Featured Mountain Lion Outfitters guided a client to this big tom last week. It was a six year old tom weighing in at 165lb. The track was in sugar snow so it took a while for the hounds to get it going. After the dogs closed in on him he ran in circles in some big rock piles and finally treed in a huge ponderosa on top of the tallest rock pile. It’s always fun listening and watching those high speed races. Learn more about our Utah mountain lion hunts. Read More →

Letter to Arizona Governor Exploits Tragedy (Columbus, Ohio) – The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) decries the most recent effort of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to ban hunting in Arizona. On November 11, PETA sent a letter to the Governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano, urging support of legislation that would ban hunting by anyone younger than 18. PETA is attempting to exploit recent November 5 news coverage of a tragedy in which an eight year-old boy allegedly shot and killed his father, Vincent Romero, and Timothy Romans with a .22-caliber rifle. The organization claims that the violent act was fomented by a recent family prairie dog hunting trip. PETA told Gov. Napolitano that hunting teaches “children... [SEE MORE]

The 2008 South Dakota pheasant season was an interesting one. Our Featured Outfitter recently sent us some of their pics from the season so far as well as some information. The report is that there are tons of birds, but conditions have been fairly tough. Most of the corn is still standing due to high moisture content giving the birds lots of hiding places, plus the weather has not cooperated. It has been cold and windy most days. There have been wind gusts up to 60 mph… that makes for hard bird hunting. IF the dogs can smell the birds and IF the birds hold for you, you better shoot before those roosters get in that wind, ’cause they get movin’ fast. Still, they have limited out most days even though they’ve had to work... [SEE MORE]
