My neighbor found this huge buck on a local duck club here in Hagerman, Idaho. I don’t know what buck scores yet, but he is a monster for sure. Four other bucks were found dead in the same area. It is assumed that they are mountain lion kills. When I find out what he scores, I’ll let ya’all know. In the mean time, shoot straight. ‘Tis the season. See more sheds and dead-heads Read More →

I’m sure that you are painfully aware of the current state of our global economy. Most of the effects of the global recession have been negative, but there have also been some positive outcomes from the situation as a whole. The value of the South African Rand has recently dipped to its lowest level in the past seven years, making it a much more attractive destination for foreigners. For the past few years the currency has been trading at around 7 RSA Rand to 1 US Dollar, but with recent economic doubts the currency has dipped to as low as 11.50 RSA Rand to 1 US Dollar. This drastic decrease in currency value has been blamed on a host of factors, including falling equities, weaker commodity prices, a soaring US dollar and emerging market... [SEE MORE]

This nice 300 class bull elk was tagged last week by one of our hunters. The hunt this year was extremely tough and we had to pull out all the stops to plan a spot and stalk. I was able to get into the area about 1.5-2 hours ahead of our hunters to test the wind and find the herd.  As luck turned our way the elk began moving toward the creek below us and a few small openings presented shot opportunities. Due to some last minute changes and set up issues the hunter wound up using me for a rifle rest and I was not able to get the shot on video. I am very bummed as it was a perfect set up for video. For pheasant hunters who were in the fields last year, 2008 may offer a sense of déjà vu as South Dakota once again boasts a near-record population of ringnecks. Pheasant brood count surveys last year estimated a pheasant population that recalled the Soil Bank days of the 1950s and ’60s and this year’s brood counts estimated that the statewide population had grown by 9 percent. “Once again good weather conditions and plentiful habitat have combined to help increase South Dakota’s pheasant population,†said Jeff Vonk, secretary of the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department. “It looks like this will be another great opportunity for hunters.†Even while the pheasant population in South Dakota is... [SEE MORE]

Start with a small to medium size camping trailer… Pull it out to a likely looking area… Jam some poles in the ground… Use a couple of tractors with loaders… Raise it WAY UP (and fasten it!)… Drink a beer or two and step back to admire your work… Build a deck (so you’ll have a place to sit outside and drink another beer… Build some nice stairs so you don’t have to go down a ladder while inebriated… Practice shooting deer with a piece of lumber… Can’t live on beer alone. Don’t burn down the deck though. I wish I had somebody to give credit for this great project or knew how to get the plans, but I got this in an email and have no idea who the originator... [SEE MORE]

PIERRE, S.D. — Updated rental rates are now available for new Conservation Reserve Program contracts. In many areas of South Dakota, average CRP rental rates have increased 10 percent to 20 percent, making them much more competitive with local cash rent. “This increase in CRP rental rates will make enrolling environmentally sensitive lands such as wetlands much more attractive for landowners†said Game, Fish and Parks Private Lands Habitat Biologist Rocco Murano. “CRP has been vital in the maintenance and expansion of local wildlife populations.†“Pheasants and waterfowl are highly dependent on high quality grassland habitat for nesting and brood rearing,†according to GFP Private Lands Habitat Biologist...
