PIERRE, S.D.—Favorable weather conditions and good habitat have once again combined to produce a record pheasant crop in South Dakota. Brood count surveys conducted by the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department tallied pheasant numbers that once again hearken back to the days of the Soil Bank era in the 1950s and ’60s. Surveys that measure pheasants per mile from brood routes put the 2008 index at 8.56 pheasants per mile, a figure that’s 64 percent ahead of the 10-year average and the highest recorded since 1963. “The survey results show a statewide increase of 9 percent in pheasant numbers,†said GFP Secretary Jeff Vonk. “That’s amazing considering the record-setting level of last year’s brood... I subscribe to quite a few blogs and I come accross some cool stuff while reading them. Here are some of my favorites: Base Camp Legends, always on the move has added a bunch of cool new stuff to their site. You can now share your videos, and check out their forum I think it’s gonna be a good one. They also recently became an Outdoors International hunting and fishing broker. Double Tough Outdoors is a new blog that I just found. I liked this story about a rare albino mule deer that was photographed near Meeker, Colorado a couple years ago. It reminded me of a picture I took of an albino mule deer a long time ago. I’ll have to blog about it. I also came across a product review for the Thermacell Bug Repellant System. I’ve... [SEE MORE]

Success is sweet and failure is bitter. One thing most sportsmen know is the bitter-sweet taste of an outdoor adventure.  Many moons ago I was invited to archery elk hunt with a guy in his secret area. I think our connection was in the fact that I had the same morals regarding the preservation of a secret spot. He was and is a die hard outdoorsman and I can’t help but admire him.  I had decided to only take a branch antlered bull so right off I put the odds against me. We hunted hard for 10 days and I really can’t remember how many elk I encountered and the number of times I screwed up. I was able to get close enough twice to reach out and touch an elk, I witnessed an epic battle between two of the largest... This is a re-post from when we didn’t have many readers. I was excited about elk season this year. I hunted the first few days pretty hard and passed up a few cows and small bulls, but it was pretty slow compared to last year. On the third day, we got up early and worked a few bulls. I even got a shot at a REALLY, REALLY nice bull that morning. I judged him for 40 yards but he was 47… oops. I should have used my rangefinder. I had all of the time in the world. I sat in camp for a few hours that afternoon nursing my wounds. I was pretty dissapointed in myself. There was no excuse for missing that bull. I know I’ll re-live that moment for years. I took a short nap, got up at 3:00 in the afternoon and headed up The Canyon to sit... [SEE MORE]

Have you picked up your local or state hunting/fishing regulations yet? It seems like every year there is something new we don’t know about. A few years ago the archery rules had changed and I was more than a little in the dark about the changes. It didn’t negatively effect me but what IF it had. I could have been facing a fine, license suspension, jail, etc if I was using equipment that had not been approved. It might be a good idea to put 2008 Reg’s on your shopping list. It is on mine, if I can find it. - The Associated Press Edition Date: 08/05/08 IDLEDALE, Colo. – A mountain lion crept through an open door into a house outside Denver, snatched a Labrador retriever from a bedroom where two people were sleeping and left the dog’s dead body outside, wildlife managers said Tuesday. No one else was hurt in the home about 14 miles southwest of Denver. Wildlife officials later trapped the 130-pound male cat using the dog’s body as bait and fatally shot it. Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Tyler Baskfield said the cat entered the house through open French doors early Monday and fled with the Labrador after the owners woke up. “The people got up and looked around and saw the mountain lion’s tail leaving the house,”... Here is a diary of a fishing trip with our Alaskan Charter Fishing Guide. By: Ken Nielsen, Kevin Webb, Larry Webb, Shelly Sheinck Arrived on 21st of July (Monday) Greg put us up at Majestic Expeditions (ME), with owners Josh and Christina Graves. ME is pretty new, but they have lots of expertise. Christine is a 5 star chef; She is an incredible cook and I knew my waistline was in trouble. Josh has his Captains License and knows the business well. The charter fishing was great! Greg and his Captains know the in’s and out’s to catching Fish, very professional, but a lot of fun. The new boats are awesome, lots of room to fish, comfortable, and warm in the cabin. A nice change from the small Dory’s I’ve fished out of... [SEE MORE]

Captain Boo BooSomewhere in Minnesota on July 21, this bear was spotted sporting a jar on his head. Now I know that bears are smart, but I didn’t know they were capable of aspiring to such heights as role-playing. This bruin obviously wanted to be an astronaut… now that’s a lofty goal. Unfortunately though for the bear, his little game backfired on him. He could breathe just fine, but eating or drinking presented a bit of a problem, and the fact that he lacked the opposable thumbs that conventional astronauts sport wasn’t helpful either. For six days after he was first spotted, officials tried to trap and/or tranquilize him, but he didn’t cooperate. Bad move Boo Boo. When he showed up in town, the decision was... [SEE MORE]

Fish counts have surprised the experts. They show that nearly 215,000 red salmon have been counted at Bonneville dam. This is the highest number of returning adults since 1955. Most of these fish will follow the Columbia River to Wenatchee and Osoyoos lakes in WA, and the remaining (which represent the most endangered run) will go up the Snake River. As of Tuesday the 22nd, the Snake River fish numbered around 800, nearly 25 times the ten year average, but they still have a long journey ahead of them in order to make it to their spawning lakes in Idaho. Their epic journey includes eight dams and over 450 miles of river! Even though this is a relatively small number of fish, it is exciting when you compare it to ten years ago when only two adult...
