Idaho chukars must endure heavy snows By Andy Ogden For the Idaho Press-Tribune Andy Ogden is a Wildlife Habitat Biologist for Idaho Department of Fish and Game — Southwest Region. Idaho’s chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) is native to a wide swath of southern Europe, Asia Minor, Northern India and China. Several chukar subspecies occupy these native ranges, each with its own set of distinctive behavioral traits. Interestingly enough, the subspecies that was transplanted into Idaho and other western states years ago never had to cope with extended periods of deep snow in its native homeland. In these areas, the birds had the option of simply descending to lower elevations to escape heavy snow. In northern India for example, it... [SEE MORE]

Yesterday we took our kids fishing with Marc Warnke and his family. The weather was great, the fish were biting and we had a great time. Here’s Coletti and Webb reeling in a big one. I’m trying to get Webb to give me a “high-five”, but he’s too busy mugging it up for the camera. He ended up catching the big fish of the day. A rainbow trout about five pounds. Cree’s not so sqeemish. He actually took a bite out of his fish… said he was a caveman. Cree caught the most fish today. I lost count, but he was on fire. Read More →

Washingon, D.C. – May 09 - After nearly four months of extensions, House and Senate Farm Bill conferees have reached an agreement on the main elements of the 2008 Farm Bill. Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever (QF) urge both the House and the Senate to pass the legislation, and for President George W. Bush to sign the bill into law as quickly as possible. If passed, the bill would provide an additional $4 billion in new funding for conservation programs; welcome news for wildlife conservation and hunters. “The Farm Bill is the single biggest opportunity for conservation. Any further delay to a new bill would have jeopardized three decades worth of progress toward cleaning our water, protecting our soils and creating habitat... [SEE MORE]

PIERRE, S.D.—Two South Dakota hunting seasons have been expanded to allow more opportunities for young hunters and more opportunities are on the way. The S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Commission has approved changes in the youth pheasant season that lengthen the season and allow hunting to start earlier in the day. The 2008 season will be lengthened to five days running Saturday, Oct. 4, through Wednesday, Oct. 8. “This is part of a trend we’re working toward in South Dakota—more opportunities for youth,†said Wildlife Division Assistant Director George Vandel. The season approved by the GFP Commission raises the minimum age for participation from 15 to 17. Because early October can still have some hot days, shooting... [SEE MORE]

Preparing for and executing a Mountain Goat hunt is a challenging experience that many hunters dream of taking. However, considering that relatively few hunters have first hand experience of Mountain Goat hunting, this article serves as a guide to discuss some of the highlights of Mountain Goats and planning for your hunt. The odds: Idaho has relatively good drawing odds for lifetime species such as Mountain Goat and Bighorn Sheep. By lifetime I mean that you generally get to take only one of such species in your lifetime. It’s also the experience of a lifetime for those who draw. The animal: Mountain Goats are white, except for eyes, horns, the end of their nose, and feet. In central Idaho the goats inhabit the mountain tops, even tips,... [SEE MORE]

Recent scientific and economic continue to be cranked out by both proponents and opponents of breaching of the three dams on the lower Snake River downstream of Lewiston, Idaho. Legislation entitled the Salmon Economic Analysis and Planning Act (SEAPA H.R. 1507) has been introduced in Congress. SEAPA would authorize independent studies form the National Academy of Sciences and Government Accountability Office to provide Congress with up-to-date information to make timely decisions regarding the future of the Columbia-Snake River Basin salmon recovery. SEAPA seeks a thorough analysis of salmon recovery measures including dam breaching in order to develop a complete picture of what’s necessary to protect and restore salmon and steelhead... We’re in South Dakota right now helping our outfitter here plant some shelter belts around his fields to improve his already phenomenal pheasant habitat. We have 1700 trees to re-plant There are approximately 30,000 trees in all, but we are re-planting the ones that have died. The species of trees include: chokecherry; nanking cherry; cherry; golden current; dogwood; plum; apricot; apple; green ash; Black Hills spruce; Eastern red cedar; Rocky Mtn. Juniper; Ponderosa pine; buffalo berry; maple; black walnut; willow; hensen hedgehair and a few more that I can’t remember the name of. It is hard work, but it will be rewarding to come back in a few years to see all of this great habitat. This outfitter is also going to play with some... [SEE MORE]

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s hunting heritage has traditionally been passed from one generation to the next. Recognizing that linage, and wanting to help it along, the S.D. Legislature approved a bill this year that allows children as young as 10 years of age to take part in mentored hunting opportunities. “Having youngsters in the field is nothing new in South Dakota,” said Tony Leif, director of the Wildlife Division of the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department. “Many South Dakotans learned about hunting and the outdoors well before they were old enough to hunt.” The legislation, which takes effect July 1, allows youth who are 10 to 15 years old to hunt in the company of a mentor. “At Game, Fish and...
